Damien Linnane

Damien Linnane is an author, illustrator and the editor of Paper Chained, an art and writing magazine for people in prison.

After being told he was not eligible for therapy, rehabilitation or education in prison, Damien turned to writing in order to use his time in prison constructively. His first book, Scarred, was written by hand in custody, and after its completion he taught himself to draw. Damien’s art has now been exhibited in Sydney, Brisbane, New York and San Francisco, and he is the illustrator of the book This is Ear Hustle. His most recent book is his memoir, Raw.

Recognising the lack of creative outlets for people in custody, Damien became involved in the prison magazine Paper Chained from its creation in 2017, and became editor in 2021. Paper Chained is now distributed to all people in prison in New South Wales, and more than half the incarcerated people in the United States. The magazine receives art and writing from prisons all over the world. In 2024, Damien held the first ever international prison art exhibition in Australia, which featured over 100 artworks from 25 different prisons in 8 countries.
