Closing Time at the King’s Head: A Carer’s Experience of Dementia

For six years, poet Karin De Novellis cared for her husband who was living with dementia. In 2022, she self-published Closing Time at the King’s Head, a collection of poems reflecting their shared experiences. The primary goal was to raise money for charitable organisations supporting both individuals in a care partnership.

Since then, the poems have become a springboard for discussion, self reflection and creativity in carer support sessions aptly called Kick off with a Verse.

In 2023, Karin was shortlisted for the UK King Lear Poetry Prize and poems from the collection were performed as Closing Time, a song cycle for soprano, baritone, piano and narrator composed by Newcastle composer, Ross Fiddes, and directed by Ghillian Sullivan.

Join Karin and Ghillian as they explore the complexities of a care partnership through poetry and song.

This is a free event; no bookings required.
