BottomAnna May Kirk is an artist, curator and creative producer based in Sydney. As an artist Anna is interested in the representational issue posed by the immaterial and spectral nature of Anthropogenic climate change. Through sculptural glass and sensory installations, she engages the beholder’s body as a sensitive and porous instrument for encountering the magnitude of environmental change. In her research-based practice, Kirk entangles references to vast times, intensities, and scales of our transforming planetary condition, often investigating past moments of climatic change throughout Earth’s history to speculate on the uncertain future.
Anna additionally practices as an independent curator passionate about championing the diverse and vital voices of emerging experimental artists in Australia. She is interested in collaborative, experimental and community focused approaches to projects. Kirk has worked across artist run spaces, institutions, festivals, and events to create opportunities for emerging creatives. In 2021 Kirk founded Supper Sessions, a monthly community dinner raising independent grants for artists.
Newcastle Writers Festival would like to acknowledge the Awabakal and Worimi peoples, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the festival takes place, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and extend this respect to all First Nations people attending our festival.
