BottomJude Conway, Novocastrian born and bred, specialises in the histories of ground-breaking women in Newcastle and the Hunter region. After decades working as a high school maths teacher, computer programmer at BHP and in community development in Newcastle, Darwin and Dili, her mature-age 2022 history PhD dissertation examines the women’s movement in Newcastle in the 1970s and 1980s, through the lens of her mother, Josephine Conway’s activism. Jude’s most recent academic article, co-authored with Associate Professor Nancy Cushing and Hon. Associate Professor Josephine May is Obstacle Course: Women’s Entry into Skilled Positions in the Newcastle Steel Industry 1980-2000.
Jude gives an annual talk at the Newcastle Family History Society (NFHS) and her 2026 talk is on the popularity of ballet in the steel city. Her talks and podcasts are available through the NFHS website including a side interest: “Second World War links between Newcastle and Portuguese Timor, a forgotten story?”
Newcastle Writers Festival would like to acknowledge the Awabakal and Worimi peoples, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the festival takes place, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and extend this respect to all First Nations people attending our festival.
