CANCELLED – Newcastle Sonnets
THIS SESSION HAS BEEN CANCELLED, SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.
A discussion/performance by poet Keri Glastonbury and composer Jacqueline Amidy about the process of adapting Newcastle Sonnets into a Song Cycle.
Newcastle Sonnets is the poet’s homage to Newcastle, and in this translation of sonnet into song Amidy seeks to release the latent musicality of Glastonbury’s disjunctive syntax, to create a soundscape of place.
Words and music seem such an obvious amalgam, but as Amidy states: “The collaboration idea started when I read Keri’s poems. She spoke a kind of cut up, smashed up dialogue of observation, peppered with crazy references to weird things. As a singer, I was fascinated by her words and rhythms, space and nuance, vowel textures and stabs of consonants and I knew immediately I wanted to do something with it.”
