Historical Fiction Masterclass for Primary Students

Newcastle Writer’s Festival’s dynamic Story Hunter team are back for another all-day historical fiction deep dive at Newcastle Museum! Focusing on artefacts and photographs from the ‘Fire and Earth’ exhibit that relate to the Hunter’s industrial and mining history, students will learn how to blend historical settings with their own imagination to create a short story. Considering our local industry and its ties to immigration, community, family and resilience, students identify with characters from Newcastle’s past. This workshop is designed for high potential and passionate young writers in Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6). The experienced writers and educators from Story Hunter have joined forces with the expert historians and curators at Newcastle Museum to make this a hands-on, informative day where our next generation of writers will have the opportunity to make their stories shine.

Schools are encouraged to send a small group with a supervising teacher. Tickets are currently capped at 12 per school to ensure more schools have the opportunity to attend, however, additional students may be added to the waiting list on request – please contact Emma at storyhunter@newcastlewritersfestival.org.au for more information.
