BottomTyree Barnette is a transplant to Sydney originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. He and his partner Tracina moved to Sydney in 2012. While here, they have grown their family with two boys. His day job is within student services at Western Sydney University. Additionally, Tyree is a member of the Sweatshop Literacy Movement based out of Western Sydney. As part of that movement, he has written a number of pieces for SBS Life and contributed to anthologies such as Love, This Little Red Thing and Racism: Stories on Fear, Hate & Bigotry. Tyree’s debut novel, Stolen Man on Stolen Land: Being African-American in Australia, is an account of his experience living abroad, evolving US and global politics, and looking back at America with a foreign lens. He also covers the evolution of modern masculinity, fatherhood, the rise of Black Lives Matter, and cultural belonging across two countries. From the cultural safe space of the Black American barber shop to the Melanesian islands of Vanuatu, Tyree weaves his experience of being part of the Black diaspora in the Global South with humour, insight, sensitivity and vulnerability. When he’s not writing, Tyree enjoys spending time with his two amazing boys.
