BottomNatalia Figueroa Barroso is a writer of Uruguayan descent with Charrúa, Yoruba and Iberian heritage. She was born on Dharug Ngura and raised between her birthland and homeland. Natalia is a member of the Sweatshop Literacy Movement and holds degrees in Communication, Screenwriting and Media Production from the University of Technology Sydney.
Her poems and stories have won Red Room Poetry’s 30in30 for Poetry Month 2024, and have been shortlisted or longlisted for the Lane Cove Literary Award, Newcastle Poetry Prize, SBS Voices Emerging Writers’ Competition and the Palette Emerging Poet Prize.
Natalia has worked in writers’ rooms for the acclaimed TV drama Bump (Stan, Seasons 3 & 4), and made her editorial debut with Aster(ix) Journal on the 2022 climate issue anthology Mothers Unearthed. Her writing appears in publications including Meanjin, Overland, Griffith Review, Red Room Poetry, SBS Voices, ABC Everyday, kindling & sage, Mascara Literary Review and Puentes Review. She is featured in several anthologies, including Sweatshop Women: Volume One, Racism, Between Two Worlds and Povo. In 2024, she received a literature grant from Creative Australia. Her debut semi-autobiographical work of fiction is Hailstones Fell Without Rain.
