BottomJuno Gemes is one of Australia’s most celebrated contemporary photographers. In words and images she has spent 41 years documenting the changing social landscape of Australia, and in particular the lives and struggles of Aboriginal Australians. Her portraiture and photo essays have been extensively published, she has had numerous national and international solo exhibitions, and her works are held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Australia, and Art Gallery of NSW, among others. Between 1986 and 2010, Juno and her partner, poet Robert Adamson, were co-directors of Paper Bark Press.
Newcastle Writers Festival would like to acknowledge the Awabakal and Worimi peoples, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the festival takes place, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and extend this respect to all First Nations people attending our festival.
