AC Grayling

A.C. Grayling CBE FRSA FRSL is a British philosopher and author. Until June 2011, he was Professor of Philosophy at Birkbeck, University of London, where he taught from 1991. In 2011 he founded and became the first Master of New College of the Humanities (now Northeastern University London). He is also a supernumerary fellow of St Anne’s College, Oxford, where he formerly taught.

Grayling is the author of over 35 books on philosophy, politics, culture, biography, history of ideas, human rights and public ethics.

His most recent book is For the People on the heat of authoritarianism to democratic systems, arguing that although the latter are far from perfect, they generally protect human rights, civil liberties and the rule of law, all of inestimable value because they provide a context for the possibility of individual human flourishing. The book identifies the sources of current dissatisfaction with and attacks on democratic systems, and by doing so suggests how best these can be protected.
