John ‘Stinker’ Clarke

Biography

John ‘Stinker’ Clarke is a retired teacher who holds a masters degree in education from the University of Newcastle, a keen recreational fisherman and the author of six books including Broughton Islanders, Old Salt and Oysterman. His books reflect his love for the sea and a keen interest in the history of the Port Stephens region and the characters who have pioneered the district. Recently, he published a book for children, The Adventures of Stinker and Stinkpot. John has found the ideal working partner in local art teacher and illustrator Ileana Clarke who, in John’s words, “Reflects my words in paint”. John resides at Fingal Bay and has written the fishing column in the local newspaper for 30 years. He is a committed environmentalist and works to protect the unique beauty and natural resources of Port Stephens.
